State Forests to be Converted to National Parks

Camping is a recreational activity enjoyed by young and old and Cooloola has some of the most unique camping zones in South East Queensland. Inskip Peninsula, Amamoor and Glastonbury are three fantastic areas that even welcome your pampered four legged friends into the family camping experience. However, this will change if the State Forest reserves are converted to National Park. If you have ever enjoyed walking your dog through state forest, taken your pet camping or even swimming at a favourite water hole in a state forest area then these changes will effect you.

To date, we have only heard resistance from horse riders wanting to enjoy some of our most scenic locations, in equine company rather than by four wheel drive. As one of the most eco-friendly tourist activities available, I would thoroughly recommend the experience of a trail ride or leisurely horseback tour. Glastonbury, Brooyar, Imbil and Amamoor State Forests will eventually come under the spotlight and be converted to National Park. Books have been written on where people can stay with animals with Cooloola providing an exciting range of options. To lose these pet friendly camping areas would be a major loss to our visitors and the residents of Cooloola Shire, not to mention the pets who will no longer be welcome in places they currently enjoy. This will effect all domestic animals, not just horses. There are many justified reasons why domestic animals should not be allowed in our National Park areas. However, experience has demonstrated that those who love their dogs enough to take them on family adventures are responsible, doting pet owners. Anyone taking their animals into public areas should have the sense to keep them under control. Unfortunately, we always remember the minority who do the wrong thing and spoil it for everyone else. You can do something about it. Have your say by post, e-mail or simply register (free) your use of the State Forest areas around Gympie by completing a “permit to traverse” form, available from National Parks offices.

State Forests to National Parks

There is good reason why pets are not allowed in National Parks - they disturb native wildlife and even their scent can cause problems. They do not belong in National Parks at all. I think it is great that more national parks are going to be created - we should be welcoming it rather than thinking of ourselves and our wants. The Environment should be protected as we have lost so much already.

pet friendly campsites

I beleive it would be a great loss to reduce the number of campsites that alow pets. I have 2 dogs and always find it dificult to find areas where I can take them overnight. I enjoy camping but I am often reluctant to go as it would mean leaving the dogs at home alone for the weekend or even longer.we need more campsites that alow pets not less of them.
